Emotion of Light
Location
Ames, Iowa
Assignment: The goal of this assignment was to refine precision in interactive design by experimenting with any material to create a seamless visual transition. This project encouraged a deeper understanding of spatial relationships, lighting techniques, and user interaction.
Approach: The project began with conceptual sketches exploring how light and shadow could visually transition between emotions. A smile shape was laser-cut from wood, designed to produce different shadows based on light direction. By experimenting with lighting angles, I refined the design to ensure that when the light source is positioned below, the shadow forms a smiling face, and when placed above, it creates a sad face. The interactive nature allows the audience to engage with the installation, controlling the transformation between expressions.
Results: The final installation successfully demonstrated the intended emotional transition. The interaction between light, shadow, and form created a compelling visual experience that encouraged audience engagement and reflection on the nature of perception. The project highlighted how simple design elements can evoke deep emotional responses, making it suitable for exhibition in galleries or public spaces as an interactive and thought-provoking piece.
